Big Game Hunter
Discoverer of Lost Civilizations
Unwitting Innerwalker
Currently a member of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Quotation 1: "Imagine to yourself a small, withered, yellow-faced man of sixty-three, with thin hands, large brown eyes,
a head of grizzled hair cut short and standing up like a half-worn scrubbing-brush--total weight in his clothes, nine stone six--and you
will get a very fair idea of Allan Quartermain, commonly called Hunter Quartermain, or by the natives 'Macumazahn'--[in English] he who keeps
a bright look-out at night, or, in vulgar English, a sharp fellow who is not to be taken in." -- Allan Quartermain, by H. Rider Haggard
Quotation 2: "I am in a condition of pitiable funk." -- King Solomon's Mines, by H. Rider Haggard
Quotation 3: "Bravo, Quartermain!" sang out Good; "you've frightened him."
"This made me very angry, for if possible to avoid it, I hate to miss in public. When one can only do one thing well, one likes to keep up one's
reputation in that thing. Moved quite out of myself at my failure, I did a rash thing. Rapidly covering the general as he ran, I let drive
with the second barrel. The poor man threw up his arms and fell forward on his face. This time I had made no mistake; and--I say it as a
proof of how little we think of others when our own pride or reputation are in question--I was brute enough to feel delighted at the sight."
-- King Solomon's Mines, by H. Rider Haggard
Quotation 4: "It is a hard thing that when one has shot sixty-five lions, as I have in the course of my life, that the
sixty-sixth should chew your leg like a quid of tobacco. It breaks the routine of the thing, and putting other considerations aside, I am
an orderly man and don't like that." -- King Solomon's Mines, by H. Rider Haggard

Wealth Level: rich (after his adventure in King Solomon's Mines), otherwise working stiff
Weapons: Period rifles, pistols, knives, swords, etc. Quartermain is an expert in Victorian firearms.
Juncture: 1850 (really 1897)
Notes: "At an age when other boys are at school I was earning my living as a trader in the old Colony. I have been trading,
hunting, fighting, or mining ever since." Allan Quartermain lived much of his life in Africa, and maintains a residence in Durban, Natal.
His left leg was mauled by a lion, giving him a limp and slowing him. He is an expert big game hunter and, over his many years in Africa,
gained knowledge of lost civilizations and been on several amazing adventures. He is not your standard square-jawed Victorian Hero. He's
smart enough to avoid trouble when he can, and makes a point of not forgetting to pocket the loot before escaping. But in other ways he's
a model hero and adventurer: He is generally a cool-headed tactician, able to plot the best way to handle a situation, an expert shot, and
able to hold his own with hand weapons. He had a son, Harry, whose death drove Quartermain into deep depression.
In Feng Shui:
Allan Quartermain went through a strange tunnel in _Allan Quartermain_, which was actually part of the Netherworld. Upon returning
from that adventure, his tendency to 'funks,' as he calls them, was increased by having to endure minor shifts without understanding their
nature. This drove him to seek relief in Opium dreams, where Mina Harker found him in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comic.
