The Invisible Man (Hawley Griffin)
Former student of Medicine and Physics, University of London
Currently a member of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Quotation 1: "But you begin now to realise," said the Invisible Man, "the
full disadvantage of my condition. I had no shelter, no covering,--to get
clothing, was to forego all my advantage, to make of myself a strange and
terrible thing. I was fasting; for to eat, to fill myself with
unassimilated matter, would be to become grotesquely visible again."
"I never thought of that," said Kemp.
"Nor had I. And the snow had warned me of other dangers. I could not go
abroad in snow--it would settle on me and expose me. Rain, too, would make
me a watery outline, a glistening surface of a man--a bubble. And fog--I
should be like a fainter bubble in a fog, a surface, a greasy glimmer of
humanity. Moreover, as I went abroad--in the London air--I gathered dirt
about my ankles, floating smuts and dust upon my skin. I did not know how
long it would be before I should become visible from that cause also. But I
saw clearly it could not be for long." -- The Invisible Man, by H.G. Wells
Quotation 2: "Aheheh. So sorry, Miss Murray. I guess you did not see me on
the toilet." League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 2, No. 3
Bod 7 (Str 8), Chi 0 (For 5), Mnd 5 (he's unhinged; Mnd 8 before), Ref 7
Skills:
Guns 8
Medicine 8
Sabotage 7
Info/Optics 15 I haven't *seen* anyone with a greater knowledge of Optics :-)
(These skill values reflect situations where he can use his invisibility. Say Intrusion 5, Intimidation 7, Martial Arts 7 when he is made visible)
Intrusion 10
Intimidation 8
Martial Arts 10
Unique Schtick:
Invisibility: Griffin is effectively invisible. Detection of his location
requires use of a sense other than normal sight, introduction of foreign
matter to show him, or estimating his location based on the visible results
of his presence (footprints, doors opening, etc.). He has also been detected
by the following:
-- Mr. Hyde's vision picked him up, indicated Mr. Hyde sees into the infrared
-- Dogs pick up his scent and will attack unless they are well-trained
-- Food is visible inside him before it is digested
-- His blood congeals red; his presence has been detected by it
Source Material:
The Invisible Man, by H.G. Wells
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, by Alan Moore
Many, many TV shows and movies, where he is often played by wires.
Wealth Level: poor (book), rich (comic)
Weapons: For obvious reasons, The Invisible Man favors found weapsons. These have included revolvers, iron posts, chairs, knives...
Juncture: 1850 (really 1897)
Notes: Hawley Griffin's research in Optics led him to discover a way to turn
invisible--making his bones, organs, etc. have the save refractive index as
air. His methods also serve to turn objects invisible, but the process seems
to have completed the unhinging of his mind so he forgot to turn warm clothing
invisible before starting out on his rampage. He is dangerous and
untrustworthy. Based on the comic, for FS, I peg him as a dupe of the Order of the Wheel.
