I installed Red Hat 7.1. Using the PCGA-DVD51/A drive without the power adapter lets you boot from the CD. At the install command line I issued the following command: text The 'text' makes Red Hat use the text-based installer.

I had previously I deleted the D: drive and set up my Red Hat 7 partitions in that space.

Language Selection: English

Keyboard Selection: us

Red Hat Linux: OK

Installation Type: Custom System

Automatic Partitioning: Manually Partition

Disk Setup: Disk Druid

Set up your partitions to match your tastes

Choose Partitions to Format: I chose all of them

[*] Check for bad blocks during format

LILO Configuration: OK

LILO Configuration: /dev/hda Master Boot Record (MBR)

LILO Configuration: Device /dev/hda1, Partition type DOS/Windows, Default, Boot label dos

Device /dev/hda1, Partition type Linux Native, Default *, Boot label linux

Hostname Configuration: your hostname here

Firewall Configuration: Choose at least Medium or High here, then OK

Mouse Selection: Generic - 3 Button Mouse (PS/2)

Language Support: [*] English (USA)

Time Zone Selection: [ ] Hardware clock set to GMT, America/New York

Root Password your password here, twice

Add User your user here

User Account Setup more users here, if desired

Authentication Configuration your choices here; at least [*] Use Shadow Passwords and [*] Enable MD5 Passwords

Package Group Selection your choices here

X probe results: Video Card: ATI Rage Mobility, X server: XFree86

Installation to begin (complete log of install in /tmp/install.log) OK

Formatting switch to Alt-F5 to see formatting display

Package Installation switch back to Alt-F1 to see package installation display

Post Install

Complete: OK

The install will reboot. Log into your new Red Hat system and look around. You can shutdown to remove the CD-ROM drive with a shutdown -h now command.

Networking

Configure networking to match your environment.

X Windows

Now you can rename your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and copy this XF86Config-4 (based on everyone else's) in its place. Rename it to get rid of the '.txt'.
